Before our family trip for 10 days throughout Germany, I purchased a few different travel guides. After having each of them in hand before leaving home, we didn’t even put this one in our luggage. I reccommend Daytrips Germany, 6th Edition 1st and then Rick Steves’ Germany and Austria 2006. Those 2 books were great for finding tourist sites, great restaurants and hotels that could accomodate 2 adults and 2 kids (most hotels don’t have rooms with 2 beds!)

I think DK Publishing is one of the outstanding publishers of travel books. They cover transportation, lodging, dining and a lot of other things that travelers so desperately need when they are away from home.

The only reason I don’t give this guide (or series of guides) a 5 Star rating is that they are VERY HEAVY to carry around… we take Rick Steves and sections from Frommers Guides with us, and to a lesser extent we tear out pages from this guide. It is a very well put together guide, glossy photos, maps etc. and a Must Buy BEFORE you leave to help with planning… in another year or two maybe it will come as an “app” for the IPhone/ITouch so the weight issue won’t be a problem when deciding on what to pack. Till then, study it… tear out pages to bring… and dream about places you may never visit!

This is the travel guide that I used when I lived in Germany for 3 years and it served me well. Though my copy (circa 2000) is a bit outdated, I used it again when I traveled to Berlin more recently. It is beautifully illustrated, with cut away diagrams of cathedrals, museums, etc. Each German state is covered in depth, city maps are easy to follow, and the hotel/restaurant recommendations are broken down by price range. These guides are unsurpassed for seeing the sights, taking in the culture, history, architecture, etc. There is also an extremely helpful section about local customs, getting around, tipping, regional cuisine, and other boons to the tourist. Backpackers or folks traveling on a budget might want to look at another guide vis a vis lodging and cheap eats. And this book does not have much on night life.

This is a wonderful book! I gave it to my father for an upcoming family trip to Germany. It provided us with lots of extra information about specific sites and general history of each town. The graphics and photographs are great and add to the usefulness of the book. A must buy for those traveling throughout Germany!
