The author says that this is neither a narrative or travelogue, and he is entirely correct. Ignoring the typos and other editing issues (?Lost in Translation), I would rank this as one of the two essential books (with Wheeler’s, “Travels in a Thin Country”)for the traveler (as opposed to “tourist”)who wishes more than a cursory examination of Chile.
This small tome is seldom noted but is funny and a great intro to this fascinating country. No, Hansen is not Bruce Chatwin, but a fun and educating read none the less.
